Laura Dodgson: Artist Statement. Communication is the central theme of work. I take enjoyment in the spontaneous dialogue and unexpected events which occur during the interaction between both the performers and the audience.Performance is often the media I use to explore this, where the idea of a piece is present, yet the performance itself is improvised. The body is the most considered material within these dialogues, as I am looking for the emotion in language, a stripped down yet accentuated tool for communicating. My interests in music, film, and ballet are influential to my art work. Musicians such as Tori Amos, Joni Mitchell, and Fiona Apple are references for their poetic lyrics and emotive melodies, as can be said for the atmospheric and emotive nature of ballet. As my work in performance progresses I am more taken by the elements of silent film.
